About Our Bakery
Petticoat Row Bakery was launched by ReMain Ventures in 2010 to provide sweets and local food products year round. In 2013 and 2014 we were named Best Bake Shop on Nantucket by Cape Cod Life Magazine and we earned a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence in both those years. In 2014 we were also awarded Best Bake Shop by the Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror’s Reader Choice Award.
Petticoat Row Bakery is open year-round and offers freshly baked goods daily. Our boutique bakery is located in the heart of historic downtown Nantucket. The upstairs kitchen produces a full selection of freshly baked goods including sweet and savory pastries, cookies, cakes and cupcakes; croissants, baguettes and bagels. We also offer a selection of artisanal products and fresh brewed organic coffee. For those off island, gift boxes are available for purchase online. History
Our Centre Street location was once known as "Petticoat Row" because of the many women-run stores in the area. Our bakery follows in this tradition of local commerce and encourages locals and visitors to shop in the downtown area.
In the 1800’s many Nantucket whalers were away at sea on voyages for sometimes years at a time. With the men being gone, the women became involved in commerce and took over the businesses to avoid a labor shortage. Most of these stores were located on Centre Street and the area of the island became known as “Petticoat Row.”
Today, women running businesses on Petticoat Row is still prevalent. It is even acknowledged by a group of women known as “Petticoat Row.” The group of women is in support of women entrepreneurs, chosen because they too are successful entrepreneurs. Here at the bakery we support these efforts and are proud to be apart of Nantucket’s future.
